Lily Cole is an actress, model and activist. Over the years she has become one of the iconic faces of her generation with a career that consistently defies the norms.
As a model she was booked for her first British Vogue cover at the age of 16. She works with many prestigious brands, including Vogue worldwide, Alexander Macqueen, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, Prada, De Beers and Moschino. She was also the face of cult beauty brand Rimmel London for three years.
She devotes time to ethical causes and has lent real support to several charities including the World Land Trust and The Ethical Justice Foundation, to whom she is now an ambassador.
As the face of De Beers, Lily went to the Kalahari to see for herself the work their charity was doing to support the plight of the Bushmen. It was on this trip that she discovered the Bushmen’s hand-crafted Ostrich eggshell jewellery and introduced the range to various prestigious retailers including Dover Street Market.
She is passionate about fair-trade and sustainable business practice - exploring the potential for sustainable production lines in fashion. Lily is co-owner of ethical clothing line The North Circular, which she helped launch with a friend. Using Wensleydale wool from a sheep sanctuary in North Yorkshire, each item is handmade using the skills of expert knitters who work from their homes.
Lily has a burgeoning film career. In 2009 she was cast as the female lead in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus. This followed a small role in 2007’s St Trinians, and her lead role in Rage, directed by Sally Potter and also starring Dame Judi Dench and Jude Law. Her other film work includes a short directed by Shekhar Kapur called Passages, and There Be Dragons, directed by Roland Joffe.
This May, Lily can be seen in two new releases, Mary Harron’s screen adaption of The Moth Diaries, and Warner Bros Snow White and the Huntsman, directed by Rupert Sanders, which stars Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth.
In June 2011 Lily graduated with double first class honours in History of Art from Cambridge University.
